You have questions. I have answers. Let’s see if they line up.
First of all, thank you for checking out my website. No, really: Thank you. Attention is an increasingly rare commodity, and for anyone to spend some of theirs on something I made… yeah, that means a lot.
But you didn’t come here to get complimented, nice as that feels. You came here because you’re curious about something. I like curious people, so I’ll try my best to satisfy your curiosity. How about a good old-fashioned Q&A!
A: Hi, I’m Martin Frost. I’m a one-man creative team combining professional writing, web design, storytelling, development, planning, and execution skills in one formidable package. For over twenty years I’ve been earning a living making other people look good online, and now it’s my turn to see if I can make myself look good, too. I live to build things, and this website is where I am doing just that. I’ve played a part in launching a couple of projects you may know; World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and many, many more; if you check out my LinkedIn profile, you’ll see the full picture. I’m a collaborator, mentor, learner, chaser of dreams, builder of worlds, teller of stories. I also make a mean eggplant lasagna.
A: I grew up on the internet; for context, I built my first VRML website back in 1997. I’ve spent most of my adult life building things online, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Before that, I’d been obsessing over board games and roleplaying games as far as I can remember. I’ve since added 3d printing to my repertoire, and I’ve built games in Unity, Unreal Engine, and Godot, as well as web-based games on platforms such as Roll20. I’ll show some of these projects off on this site in due time.
I also write. I’m an editor, copywriter, technical writer, narrative writer… the only type of writing I haven’t pursued is screenwriting. I live in Southern California, and around here you can’t throw a boba tea without hitting somebody furiously hacking away at their screenplay. No, seriously: When I first touched down, the guy driving me from LAX to my hotel tried to pitch me on his screenplay! This town, I swear.
A: No.
A: You’re gosh dang right I did! I decided I wanted to give WordPress a shot, and to their credit, their themes and other website building tools are really, really good. It would have been so easy to just go with some off-the-shelf theme, but I don’t usually go for easy if I can help it. I hacked this theme together myself, so if you see anything that’s broken, unintuitive, ugly, or upsetting, I ask that you please blame nobody but myself.
A: First of all, that’s not really a question.
A: Alright, fair. But on the topic of A.I., I’ll say this: No A.I. was used in making this website. Now, I’m not some anti-A.I. crusader, I just think LLM technology is not what this moment requires. I’ll spare you the rant (check out Ed Zitron’s blog for that), but let me just say this: There is no greater teacher than failure, and generative A.I. deprives people of the opportunity to fail. I’ve used A.I. in the past, and I understand the appeal. For me personally though? I’ve seen all I needed to see there.
A: Remember in the movie Aliens, when Hicks tells the marines to stay frosty? Staying frosty is nice, no doubt. But if you want to stay frosty, first you need to get frosty. So this is what I’m about here: Focus, lock in, sit down, listen up, and keep your cool.
Also, I thought having a website that goes with my last name would be dope.
A: I feel very strongly that, much like the noble horseshoe crab, legacy social media is an evolutionary dead end. Federated social media is the future. That’s why I’m on Mastodon, and I think it’d be cool if you joined us in the fediverse. Like, insanely cool.
A: If you have any other burning questions for me that you’d like answered, please use the contact form to get in touch.
